Eckhart Tolle, one of my favorite spiritual teachers, posted this open letter to friends on Facebook this morning. I was going to paraphrase for you, but he is so precisely eloquent, and every time I read this I experience such a healing shift, I will share the passage in it’s entirety here:
May I suggest a deeper and somewhat unusual perspective on who you are?
You are not just a person, and you are not IN the Universe.
You ARE the Universe, which IN YOU is awakening, experiencing itself, becoming conscious. That consciousness is who you are in essence. We are all fleeting expressions of it. The Universe awakens THROUGH experiencing challenges and limitations. That means YOU awaken and deepen through your challenges, as does humanity as a whole. So welcome or at least accept all that life brings you. Change what can be changed, otherwise surrender to what IS. Feel the Presence within you as the background to every experience. Know that, as Jesus put it, “you are the light of the world.”
Shortly after seeing this post, I noticed that I made a silly mistake in an email that went out to thousands of people from our studio. The photo didn’t load properly, and when you clicked on it it went to the wrong website link. Normally, my instant reaction would have been embarrassment followed by several minutes of scolding myself in my head for being so careless and idiotic. But this time I didn’t. I literally thought to myself instead:
“Hmmm. Bummer. I’ll have to fix that so it doesn’t happen again…feels nice to give myself a break for making a mistake. It’s ok to be imperfect. Being imperfect and being ok with that feels good. Hmmm, if I’m the Universe like Ekhart says, does that mean God/the Universe is imperfect too and makes mistakes? That can’t be possible. Well, “mistakes” must be a false human construct than. As is “imperfection.” Because God/the Universe is perfect – or at least is everything, so can’t be a mistake or make a mistake – so whoa. Gotta sit with that for a while…”
And here I am writing my Friday blog for you and wanting to impart this kernel of insight – a little crack in the armor of the ego-mind for you to explore in your own way: If I am and you are the Universe coming alive and we are not travelers IN something outside of us called the Universe, and we are perfect and there are no mistakes, what will you create, starting right now, to experience yourself coming alive?
Want to have your answer featured in an upcoming Radiance blog post? Send your thoughts to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Have a beautiful day of coming alive! And thanks, Ekhart!
